Housing & Urban Development

Donald Trump has chosen his former opponent in the Republican primary, Ben Carson, as the new head of the HUD. However, Carson has yet to officially accept the nomination. Ben Carson has previously spoken against fair housing, calling it “communism”. Earlier this year, Carson wrote, “There are reasonable ways to use housing policy to enhance the opportunities available to lower-income citizens, but based on the history of failed socialist experiments in this country, entrusting the government to get it right can prove downright dangerous.” Carson’s views on the matter notwithstanding, many people have argued he is incredibly unqualified for the position. He has never had experience running, or even really working with a federal agency. Osita Nwanevu, a writer for Slate, sarcastically described Carson’s ineptitude: “Of course, Carson isn’t totally without qualifications for the job. For starters, he’s lived in a city. Additionally... well, that’s about it, actually.”
